New Order NorthSide 2019

First Aid Kit, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Georgia, Gnags and Peter Sommer & Tiggerne also join headliners New order for Northside festival 2019

The line-up for NorthSide 2019 is really beginning to take shape, and the latest festival additions showcase the range of artistic talent set to grace Aarhus this year.

New Order have been high on the wish list for NorthSide for a long time, and are a band very much in demand among NorthSide’s guests. If you ask former headliners RadioheadArcade Fire, or The Stone Roses about their sources of inspiration, they will all mention New Order – emphasising how important the group have become over the last four decades. “The band have a tonne of classics on the set-list, and since New Order have not played in Aarhus since 1987, we think it is high time for a new visit“, says spokesman for NorthSide, John Fogde.

Atlanta has one of the strongest music scenes in the world, and perhaps the biggest success story in recent times is the hip-hop trio MigosTakeoffQuavo, and Offsethave been behind some oft the biggest releases since their breakthrough single ‘Versace‘, garnering attention far beyond the realms of hip-hop. Their fourth album ‘Culture III’ is already among 2019’s most hyped releases, and when Migos hit Aarhus this summer, it will not only be the trio’s first visit to a Danish festival, but potentially also the rowdiest show the venue has ever seen.

Multi-instrumentalist and talented producer Kevin Parker will be lighting up Aarhus with his woozy psychedelia and kaleidoscopic visuals. The live outfit is no less impressive, so it came as no surprise when Tame Impala were chosen to headline Coachella festival in 2019. But there’s no reason to go to California this year; Tame Impala has been high on the wish list among many NorthSide guests, and now they will finally get to see them in Denmark this summer.

Kaytranada has only one album in his discography, but ‘99.9%‘ was such a strong release that the man behind the moniker, Louis Kevin Celestin, was able to pick up both a Polaris Music Prize and a Juno Award for his debut album. The Canadian producer collaborated with artists such as Craig DavidAnderson.PaakSyd, and Little Dragon, blending his electronic elements with funk, soul, and hip-hop.

Editors Notes – For more information on the confirmed acts so far:

New Order:
For four decades, New Order have been one of the world’s most influential bands and have managed to combine numerous hits and success among critics with inspiring acts like RadioheadPet Shop BoysThe KillersLCD Soundsystem, andArcade Fire. New Order have released more than 40 singles, and songs like ‘Blue Monday‘, ‘True Faith‘, ‘World in Motion‘, ‘Regret‘, and ‘Crystal’ are just a handful of huge hits that are classics today. The seminal band have over the years been high on festival audience’s wish list, and now it has finally been possible to add legendary New Order to the headliners at NorthSide.

Migos:
Atlanta has one of the strongest hip-hop scenes in the world, and the latest success story from The ATL is the trio Migos.TakeoffQuavo, and Offset have in their short career already been behind two sensational tracks that have given them attention far beyond the traditional hip-hop world. The first was ‘Look at My Dab‘, which brought dabbing from Atlanta’s underground scene and out to the masses to the point, where Hillary ClintonEmmanuel Macron, and Prince Sverre of Norway jumped on the bandwagon. Later, ‘Bad and Boujee‘ hit the top of the American chart and was such a phenomenon thatDonald Glover thanked the trio, when he received a Golden Globe for his TV-series ‘Atlanta‘.

Tame Impala:
When Tame Impala released the album ‘Currents‘ in 2015, songs like ‘Cause I’m a Man‘, ‘Eventually’, and ‘The Less I Know the Better‘ were solid fixtures on indie-rock playlists, and ‘Let It Happen‘ was just chosen for a large advertising campaign for an American car brand. The band is no less impressive, when they reveal their psychedelic sound and visuals on the biggest stages around the world. So the impressive stage presence bundled together with the huge expectations of the band’s upcoming album makes it no surprise that Tame Impala were chosen to headline the hugely popular Coachella festival. But there is no reason to go to California this year. Tame Impala has been high on the wish list among NorthSide guests, and now they will finally get to see them in Aarhus.

Kaytranada:
Kaytranada only has one album in the discography, but ‘99.9%‘ is such a strong release that the man behind the moniker,Louis Kevin Celestin, was able to pick up both a Polaris Music Prize and a Juno Award for his debut album. On the album, the Canadian producer was helped by acts like Craig DavidAnderson.PaakSyd, and Little Dragon, who helped Kaytranada blend his electronic elements with funk, soul, and hip-hop.

First Aid Kit:
Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit is made up of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg. They have four critically acclaimed albums under their belt and were also nominated for a Brit Award in 2015 for Best International Group, as well as a following nomination earlier this year for their LP ‘Ruins‘.

Kurt Vile & The Violators:
Drawing inspiration from a classic American sound, Kurt Vile & the Violators have visited Denmark  for sold-out and critically acclaimed concerts. However, the group have yet to visit NorthSide. The timing for a debut visit is absolutely perfect, and NorthSide can’t wait to welcome them.

Georgia:
English artist Georgia started her music career as a drummer for Kate Tempest, but was also invited to sing on Leftfield‘s album ‘Alternative Light Source’ (Georgia is the daughter of Neil Barnes from Leftfield), before releasing her own debut album. Here, she drew on her background in electronic music and mixed it with American hip-hop like Missy Elliott and Ludacris and added a little North London attitude. Georgia is blowing up right now, because of the single ‘Started Out‘, which is a really intriguing preview of the upcoming album.

Peter Sommer & Tiggerne:
We welcome back Peter Sommer & Tiggere, who impressively made people forget the rain for a while in 2017 at an excellent concert that received five stars from Soundvenue. Since then, the excellent ‘Elskede At Drømme, Drømmer Om At Elske‘ was released to massive praise and was subsequently nominated for an impressive five Steppeulven Awards.

Gnags:
The band behind ‘Vilde kaniner‘, ‘Mr. Swing King‘, ‘Den dejligste morgen‘, ‘Slingrer ned ad Vestergade‘, and a myriad of other hits has for decades delivered some of the most festive and engaging concerts in Denmark. They always come to start a party, and when they hit Ådalen for the first time it will be a special and completely unique show with guests and surprises made for the occasion.
Khalid:
Khalid has four songs on the American Top 100 chart this week including the two huge hits “Eastside (with Benny Blanco and Halsey)” and “Love Lies”. The songs follow up on hits like “Location”, “Silence”, and “Young, Dumb & Broke”, each of which has more than 600,000 streams on Spotify. The Grammy-nominated R&B singer has also contributed to hits by Logic, Marshmello, Calvin Harris, and Shawn Mendes. When Khalid released “American Teen” as a nineteen-year-old, Rolling Stone Magazine called the album “the year’s freshest, most surprising debut”, and his first Danish show was upgraded to a much larger venue before ticket sales even started. Khalid is one of the world’s hottest young acts right now, and this summer he will bring his thoughtful and relevant R&B to NorthSide for the first time.

Foals:
In 2013 Foals went from being a critics favourite to being one of the most popular rock acts in the UK. With the release of “Holy Fire”, the band once again won a nomination for that year’s Mercury Prize, and both the album and single “Inhaler” were voted Best of the Year by NME, while Q Magazine voted them Best Live Act. The award came after an outstanding concert at Glastonbury that year, and two years later, Q Magazine named Foals Best Act in the World Today! Danish press has praised the band as well, and GAFFA gave the band’s latest album, “What Went Down”, five stars and called it “At once both fragile and aggressive and really, really good”. Foals last played in Denmark in 2016, so a new show on these shores is long overdue.

Alice in Chains:
There are not many of the original grunge bands left, but fortunately, we still have Alice in Chains. The band has released three albums since William DuVall joined in 2006 as a replacement for Layne Staley, and the singer has managed to lift an unusually heavy legacy in an impressive way. The band is still commandeered by Jerry Cantrell whose harmonies and guitar solos are sharper than ever and are essential in classics like “Rooster”, “Nutshell”, “Would?”, and “Man in the Box”. The ground-breaking and influential band has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and this summer they will visit Aarhus for the very first time.

Tove Lo:
Since the breakthrough with “Habits (Stay High)” in 2014, the Swedish pop star Tove Lo has mixed extremely catchy pop with provocative videos and a clear modern feminist approach. This is evident in hits like “Talking Body”, “Cool Girl”, “Disco Tits”, and “Bitches”, where the captivating electropop both challenges and excites. On stage, Tove Lo is a colourful and extremely energetic performer who will certainly create a party at NorthSide.

L.O.C.:
L.O.C. is one of the biggest names in Danish music. His popularity has grown steadily since the release of the debut album “Dominology” and he is the rare combination of artist and entertainer, who combines having a huge and loyal fan base with good reviews and massive sales figures. Hits like “Momentet”, “Undskyld”, “Frk. Escobar”, and “Marquis” underlines this, and the latest chapter in the history of L.O.C. will be written in April, where the rapper will release his ninth album. Armed with new music, L.O.C. will be ready for his first time at NorthSide, and it’s quite okay to have high expectations for his first homecourt festival appearance.

Suspekt:
Last time Danish act Suspekt visited NorthSide, they closed the Blue Stage on the second day of the festival with a concert that was unlike anything ever seen before at NorthSide. Provocative bangers were delivered in a massive power move that included a host of guests at a surprising and hugely entertaining show. That’s why Suspekt is always welcome at NorthSide, and it will definitely be another captivating experience, when they return to the Blue Stage.

Jada:
Singer Emilie Molsted performs under the name Jada and has in a very short time built a huge interest in her talents due to the songs “Pure” and “Keep Cool”. Jade’s two expertly crafted pop song bode well for the future and the songwriter and producer has through well-received concerts shown that she has both sublime vocal chops, strong material, and the ability to enthral her audience.

Jonah Blacksmith:
The Alstrup-brothers from Thy have together with their band Jonah Blacksmith been victorious over the last three years at a string of Danish festivals and venues with stories about their family from Northwest Jutland. Their roots are now explored through a new and innovative film concert, where music and stories meet in a documentary about Grandfather Johannes Smed shown behind the band at the concerts. The praised film concert is a beautiful insight into a unique family story, and the combination of great stories and amazing music is like nothing ever seen before at NorthSide.
Bon Iver:When Bon Iver released “22, A Million” in 2016, he took a big step away from the sensitive and beautiful ballads from the previous two releases. But the hip-hop and electronically-inspired result is a challenging masterpiece that was met with overwhelming praise and even comparisons with “Kid A” all over the world. For his shows, Bon Iver smoothly combines the new material with beloved classics like “For Emma” and “Holocene” in a unique concert experience, which was celebrated with five hearts by Politiken, when the American played the 2017 edition of Haven Festival.

Major Lazer:
Major Lazer have been responsible for some of the biggest hits of recent years like ‘Lean On‘ (feat.  & DJ Snake), which has secured platinum records and topped charts all over the world. With more than 1.1 billion plays on Spotify, the song is one of the biggest hits of the decade. ‘Cold Water‘ (feat. MØ & Justin Bieber), ‘Watch Out for This‘ (Bumaye), ‘Bubble Butt‘, ‘Get Free‘, and ‘Light It Up‘ have also rocked dance floors every weekend at clubs in recent years , and as one has been able to experience at several major Danish shows, the trio always delivers the goods.

The Streets:
When NorthSide moved into Ådalen in 2011, one of the festival’s headliners was The Streets. The rapper was on his farewell tour and delivered a fantastic show that featured the best tracks from his excellent catalogue. As soon as Mike Skinnerannounced a comeback for The Streets in 2017, the comments began to appear on social media from guests, who wanted a repeat performance from the man who wrote ‘Dry Your Eyes‘, ‘Has It Come to This?‘, and ‘When You Wasn’t Famous‘.

The Minds of 99:
Danish rockers The Minds of 99 are also added to the line-up by popular demand of the NorthSide guests. Since their last visit to the festival, the band have found success with ‘Ung kniv‘, ‘Alle skuffer over tid‘ and ‘K før ærlighed‘ and won prizes for their EP ‘Solkongen del 1‘. Throughout the years, they have been one of the most popular acts at the festival securing them a spot on next year’s poster.
Lydmor:
Jenny Rossander aka Lydmor made this month’s cover of GAFFA Magazine and has just released the incredible album ‘I Told You I’d Tell Them Our Story‘. She is currently playing shows with a visually impressive production that will certainly work well at NorthSide 2019.

Cautious Clay:
In addition to two popular EP releases, the sensitive vocalist has  become popular through collaborations with AlunaGeorge(‘Superior Emotion‘ from the A Star is Born soundtrack), Lil Silva (‘Always Wonder‘), and Petit Biscuit (‘Wake Up‘). The airy and jazz-inspired tracks have stirred up a lot of interest, all pointing at a future star in the making.
