Shiiine On Weekender announces latest wave of acts including ASH, DODGY, AUDIOWEB, BRIAN CANNON EXHIBITION AND THE RETURN OF BEZ’S POOL PARTY
Shiiine On Weekender announces its latest line-up additions to the 2016 edition of the hugely popular festival. Following the sell-out success of the Shiiine On Weekender 2015 – still the only festival to showcase the best of indie and dance music alongside the best up and coming new bands – further quality has just been added to its already packed line-up…
First up, Ash will be joining the already stellar line up. Since starting in 1992 the Northern Irish lads have proven to be one of the UK’s biggest and most successful bands. Their debut full length album ‘1977’, recorded with Oasis maverick producer Owen Morris at Rockfield Studios and released in 1996, sold over 1 million copies worldwide and spawned evergreen classics such as ‘Girl From Mars’ ‘Kung Fu’ ‘Goldfinger’ ‘Angel Interceptor’ and ‘Oh Yeah’. The album shot the band into superstardom and a run of 5 sold out nights at the Astoria, plus a headline slot on the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night at Glastonbury 1997, quickly followed. Fast-forward almost 20 years and, after a near decade long break from releasing material, their latest album ‘Kablammo’ was born; reminding everyone yet again why Ash have become one of the UK’s best loved bands.
Also joining the bill are the double platinum selling band Dodgy, whose performance will mark the 20th anniversary of their classic album ‘Free Peace Sweet’. The band were all over the airwaves around the release in 1996 with the huge tracks ‘Staying Out For The Summer’, ‘In A Room’ and ‘Good Enough’. Get set for a mass sing along. The band have just released their latest album ‘What Are We Fighting For’ – the fifth album from the original Dodgy line-up of Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest and Andy Miller – and is their first new material since their widely lauded comeback reunion album, 2012’s ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’.
Sean Dickson – AKA Hifi Sean – will be bringing his unique DJing skills to Shiiine On for a Sunday night set. Hifi Sean has been pushing the boundaries of music since first joining bands in his teens, and as a composer, musician, DJ and producer has continued to do so across musical genres for his whole life.
Sean is an expert in providing the soundtrack to other people’s lives. From his beginnings as singer, songwriter and producer in his band The Soup Dragons (a multi-million selling act whose worldwide hits include ‘I’m Free’ and ‘Divine Thing’) to the critically acclaimed band ‘The High Fidelity’, from which his DJ moniker is drawn and whose collaborations include the legendary BBC presenter John Peel and Mickey Finn, he’s currently a highly successful, much sought-after London based DJ, remixer and producer.
Sean’s first full length album will be released this year which has guest vocals on every track from some amazing artists like Celeda, Crystal Waters, Fred Schneider (B-52’s), Alan Vega (Suicide), and Bootsy Collins to name but a few.
Following their performance with The Stone Roses at their huge Etihad shows this week, next up for the newly reformed Audioweb will be a Sunday evening performance at Shiiine.
The band crossed the psychedelic sound of Madchester house with deep dub, dancehall and reggae influences, earning a sizable following in the UK during the late ’90s. Unlike many of their peers, they weren’t given strong support from the weekly music press, primarily because their music was considerably different from the prevalent Brit-pop and its many mutant genres. Nevertheless, the group earned a handful of influential supporters, including Ian Brown and U2, helping make its 1996 debut album ‘Mother’ a hit which included their top 10 hit ‘Bankrobber’.
The Kar-Pets will also be joining the Shiiine On 2016 line up. They are an Inspiral Carpets tribute band, but with a notable difference from other tribute bands in that the Kar-Pets feature the former lead singer of the Inspirals, Tom Hingley. Tom was a member of the Inspiral Carpets from 1989 to 2011 and sang on all the bands many chart hits as well as singing on four of their albums. Performing songs from the 30+ years of the Inspiral Carpets, including such hits as ‘This Is How It Feels’, ‘Dragging Me Down’ and ‘Saturn Five’, the set will also feature selected cover versions such as ‘Gimme Shelter’ and ‘Tainted Love’. Tom says; “The songs are the stars, come along and hear them sung by the singer who originally sang them. This is a chance to truly indulge in nostalgia and to make it new for another generation!”
This year’s exhibition will come from the legendary designer Brian Cannon. He is best known for his Microdot graphic design company and its work in the 1990s, which created the album cover for Oasis’ record breaking debut album, Definitely Maybe. He is noted for “his grandiose, ridiculously time-consuming (photo) shoots” and has produced a number of record sleeves for UK number one albums including ‘Urban Hymns’ (The Verve) and ‘1977’ (Ash) along with two further Oasis albums ‘What’s The Story (Morning Glory)’ and ‘Be Here Now’. He has also designed record sleeves for Ruthless Rap Assassins, Suede and Super Furry Animals.
His Microdot exhibition showcases some of his finest work since Microdot’s inception in 1990, and there will be a pop up shop on site too to pick up some rare items.
Last but certainly not least, we are delighted to announce that Happy Mondays legend Bez will be returning this year to host another pool party. Those who witnessed this last year are still talking about it to this day and we fully expect another riotous party on our hands. Bez in a swimming pool and acid house tunes – only at Shiiine!!
