In celebration of Liverpool’s hosting of the world’s biggest music event, the National Lottery and leading UK charity Music Venue Trust’s United By Music Tour of Liverpool, has laid over 20 gigs at 20 music venues across the city.
The Coral are one of many high-profile acts to be part of the musical event this week.
Playing the 300 plus capacity Future Yard in Birkenhead made this a very intimate gig and the venue was full to the brim with eager fans waiting to see the local band take to the stage.
This is the first time in over 20 years that the coral have played Birkenhead. The venue they last played (Stairways) has long since been closed down but no doubt a lot of the people that saw them there have come out tonight to see their long-awaited return and the band did not disappoint.
From the moment they started the crowd was hooked. Lead singer James Skelly sings with such confidence and edge that he is mesmerising to watch. His vocals sounding just as good as they were back in 1996.
The band’s tight musicianship and cohesive sound were especially evident on songs like “I remember when” and “Jacqueline,” which featured intricate guitar riffs and driving rhythms. Paul Molloy on guitar was exceptional. The screaming notes played to perfection throughout the 70 minute set.
The band’s performance of “In the Morning” and “Pass It On” were definite highlights, as they got the crowd singing and dancing along. The Coral’s mix of indie rock, psychedelia, and pop sensibilities appealed to fans of all ages and musical tastes.
And speaking of psychedelic, as part of the band’s encore they played the sublime “Goodbye”. It’s here that the band come into one. A roaring avalanche of sound and mournful lyrics. It’s here that the comparison to The Doors and The Animals is proudly on show. Ian Skelly’s voice standing out sounding strong and unwavering amongst the backdrop of guitars, drums, keyboards, and bongo drums.
The band finish the set on the ever popular and era defining song “Dreaming of you“. The crowd singing, dancing, and reminiscing.
This was an exceptional start to the Eurovision tour and I for one am glad they added The Coral to the bill even if it was last minute. From start to finish this was an experience not to be missed a performance that was a testament to their talent and versatility as a band. Let’s hope it’s not another 20 years before they play Birkenhead again.
