Africa Oyé and Mellowtone present Joe Driscoll and Sekou Kouyate, the pioneering duo of hip hop and African music fusion, performing at the intimate venue of LEAF on Bold Street.
The pair have been creating music together since 2010 where they were given a week to prepare and produce a concert together at the Nuit Metis festival in France. Since their formation, they have released an album together, performed in numerous countries and altogether have taken the world music industry by storm.
Their debut album Faya has been praised and celebrated by critics all over the world, including Robin Denselow from the Guardian who said “their collaboration is a gloriously accessible collision of styles”.
London-based, American Driscoll and Guinean kora player Kouyate might seem an unlikely collaboration since neither of them speak a word of the other’s language, but their communication has always thrived through music. Driscoll says; “At the heart of it, we both just make the noises we love; we listen to each other, and try to flow in harmony”
At any live performance of theirs, you can expect to hear a variety of instruments, sounds and techniques. The duo are known for incorporating many different styles into their music, such as afrobeat, hip-hop, funk, soul, folk and reggae.
With plans to record their next album, this will be one of the last chances to catch them live before they head back to the studio/ Support comes from Somalian Oud player, Anwar Ali as well as Mellowtone’s resident DJs keeping things lively throughout the night.
