Welsh singer-songwriter Jodie Marie has announced details of her second album ‘Trouble in Mind’, the follow up to 2012’s critically acclaimed ‘Mountain Echo’. Set for release on 24th July 2015, Jodie has revealed the first song from the album, entitled ‘Only One I’m Thinking Of’, which you can listen to here.
Plucked from obscurity at 16, and writing and recording with some of the greats of modern songwriting on debut album ‘Mountain Echo’ showcased a unique voice to the world.
Tours, TV appearances and radio plays followed, but when the dust settled, Jodie Marie took a step forwards – electing to write the bulk of her new album in isolation, in her home of Wales, and in a provincial cottage in France. She lived a little. Looked inside herself, and reflected this in the brilliant new collection of songs ‘Trouble in Mind’.
“It really felt like I was creating my own sound by doing that.” Explains Jodie “It was really refreshing to record in my home county, at StudiOwz Studio, Pembrokeshire, I felt like I had all the time in the world to make it” often leading to late night lock-in sessions with days spent “walking in the countryside, or going to the coast. It was a really natural way of recording, especially as we recorded it mostly live, I wanted it to come across like a live gig, but also like a classic recorded studio album.”
There’s a truth, a grit to songs like the one take ‘Trouble In Mind’ and but also the rousing ‘Later than you Think’ and lead single ‘Only One I’m Thinking Of’
“My parents brought me up on blues records and I have a big connection with that sound, the way it was recorded, and the feel of it – like they’re really singing from the heart.”
Whether exuberant, or bittersweet – there’s always an internalization, a thread running throughout this accomplished and coherent work
“I guess that’s why the album is called Trouble In Mind – even when things are going really well with me, there’s always that voice in the back of my mind causing me trouble in one way or another.”
With this album sounding at once classic and ageless, and also a glimpse into a 24 year old’s hopes and fears in this high pressure era, ‘Trouble in Mind’ is a compelling album – and a rarity in today’s short attention spanned focused music industry – one that will reward the listener for years to come.
