Legendary hip hop producer DJ Premier will be hitting Liverpool on Saturday 25 June, as part of a series of summer European dates. The intimate show at Arts Club Liverpool will be a chance to see the producer, pronounced one of the greatest producers of all time by Vibe magazine in 2010, up close and personal.
Starting out alongside emcee Guru, the pair made up the East Coast hip hop duo Gang Starr, who released what have become classic albums during the 1990s and at the height of hip hop, with titles including Step in the Arena, Daily Operation, Hard to Earn and Moment of Truth; all well respected amongst rap fans and critics alike. Such records and Gang Starr’s reputation for pioneering the New York City hardcore hip hop sound propelled DJ Premier into the higher echelons of music royalty.
As well as releasing his own music, DJ Premier’s collaborations are a star-studded list of some of hip hops biggest and best names, with him at the helm on production duties for the likes of Dr Dre, The Notorious B.I.G, Jay Z, Nas, Kanye West, Snopp Dogg, KRS-One and Joey Bada$$. In recent years he’s also surprised fans by producing music for artists includingChristina Aguilera and Limp Bizkit, showing his versatility and love for all musical genres.
2014 saw the DJ release a free mixtape for fans, which featured unheard Gang Starr tracks and revealed more of the duo’s history. The producer began performing alongside a newly formed band in 2015, delving back to his 1990s catalogue and performing tracks by Gang Starr, as well as more obscure songs created by Premier himself.
The producer has created groundbreaking music for almost 30 years. There is no style and sound more distinctive, and whether he’s going by the name Preem, Premo or DJ Premier, his status as a hip hop legend is undeniable.
