Emerging out of the hot Hamilton music scene in Canada, Jonny Debt delivers charismatic performances and catchy alternative rock songs. His lyrics capture his unique pseudo-psychedelic approach, creating an appeal driven by universal themes and the magnetic personality of the band. Jonny Debt is a prolific song writer who thrives on the energy of live shows and interaction with his listeners.
Jonny’s vocal style, his five-finger banjo-style picking on guitar and “banjitar”, and songs, often with shades of Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison, brand him as a truly unique artist. “Forever” is the new album that will be released in September 2015 followed by some cross-Canada touring. The producer of the album is Grammy-winner Steve Bigas who runs Porcelain Records in Hamilton.
“Purple Heart” is about yearning to do something selfless and greater than yourself. It was released in early 2015 and is enjoying solid radio numbers across Canada. “Waiting”, the single being released in June 2015, is about having a spiritual connection with yourself, being centered in the moment. In September, both the CD will be released along with the next single “Sexy Cowboy” and was, like most of the album, recorded live off the floor. It is a fun romp with that next door neighbour of yours you always liked. Later this year, the very popular tune of Jonny’s, the complex and layered “God Song” released in 2012, has been re-recorded and will be the final single release of 2015. The original video has over 32,000 views on youtube.
“When you are genuine, authentic and immerse yourself in the moment, you can’t help but let go of your ego,” he says. “All you are left with is honesty and creativity.”
Jonny Debt will tour in Canada and the United States to support the release. “We play as many shows as possible, performing live is the only reason I make records,” Jonny said. “Being able to tour in a bus with my friends and band, stopping only to play shows is the ultimate success for me. Traveling to a different city every night surrounded by creative people is my favourite thing to do.“
In November 2014, the band completed a fourteen day, twelve performance tour of China of six cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and a stadium gig in Dongguan near Hong Kong. They are looking to return in 2015/16 and are also looking to expand their horizons in Europe and beyond. His growing fan base are loyal in their support and he is sure to acquire many new fans.
