The Chemical Brothers release Under Neon Lights with St Vincent

The Chemical Brothers

The Chemical Brothers have announced the release of a new track from their hugely anticipated eighth studio album, Born In The Echoes. The hallucinogenic disco number Under Neon Lights features guest vocals from Annie Clark (St Vincent) and will be available tomorrow with pre-orders of the album (due out on Virgin on 17th July; pre-order from iTunes here: http://po.st/BITEdlx).

Chemical Brother Tom Rowlands says of the collaboration: “We’re always looking to work with likeminded people who do something a bit different to us. Annie is an amazing artist who was very up for experimenting.

This coming Sunday, the Chemical Brothers play the Other Stage at Glastonbury – their fifth headline slot at the festival. The band recently headlined Sonar in Spain and Orange Festival in Poland and are due to play shows in Europe, Japan and America over the summer.  The live show has been entirely redesigned by Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall. They have directed new visual pieces which appear on a huge LED screen behind the band. The work has been produced by Black Dog Films (Ridley Scott Associates).

Adam – the band’s long-term visual collaborator, will be standing in for Ed Simons on this run of shows, operating visuals, music and lighting from onstage next to Tom – describes the show are “a truly unique, immersive psychedelic experience. Our aim is to fully capture the spirit of the music in the incredible new Chemical Brothers live set.”

The new visuals mix lighting and projection installations (that wouldn’t look out of place at an art gallery) with the visceral raw energy of an acid house rave in a warehouse. It’s jaw-dropping, eye-boggling, euphoria-inducing and mind-altering in equal measure.

A few visual highlights of the new live set are:

  • A collaboration with dancer Akram Khan (MBE), who was filmed using motion capture at Andy Serkis’s Imaginarium Studios.
  • A psychedelic Dionysian ritual ceremony inspired by the 50’s underground films of Kenneth Anger. The Double exposed images and saturated colours reflect the 60’s feel of  “I’ll see you there” from the new album. The cast includes Benedict Wong (Sunshine, Prometheus) and Liam Walpole (Goob).
  • A dizzying trip on a fairground ride for song “EML Ritual”.
  • A film for the new single “Go” starring two South Korean roller skater dancers
  • An army of “sharpy” lights which form a grid on the stage floor all programmed to seamlessly interact with the visuals to create ‘three dimensional environments’.
  • Two huge ’50s inspired tin toy robots that fire lasers from their eyes and lip synch samples.
  • A massive reflector that the sharpy lights fire at creating a unique take on the traditional mirror ball effect (if Anish Kapoor made a mirror ball, it might look something like this)
