Introducing The Debut EP From West London Troubadour Oliver Coates

Oliver Coates

September 2015 marks the release of Vol.1, the debut EP from singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, talented lyricist and rising star Oliver Coates. Independently released on the Falcon City Records imprint, Vol.1 combines infectious hooks and progressive chord structures with stark social commentary, based on the experiences of a young aspiring musician raised in the suburban outskirts of an urban metropolis.

Growing up in the Britpop era, Coates was influenced as a child by the music and culture of the time, igniting an initial foray into songwriting and a love of broad-minded, lyric driven music. Later he discovered the poetic nature of The Libertines, Bob Dylan and Morrissey, which inspired him to dig deeper, avoiding stereotypical love songs and reflecting the darker sides of society, both on a personal and national level. Vol.1 explores the innate desire for human success in a celebrity-obsessed era, combined with the typical frustrations of a young creative stuck in suburban surroundings. These conscious lyrics are housed in up-tempo indie pop songs with highly memorable hooks and strong melodic choruses.

The technical ability and energetic performance of Coates’ live shows have already got people talking, and his expertly crafted debut EP is bound to support the notion that Coates is definitely a musician to watch. Having been compared to the likes of Ben Howard and Frank Turner, Coates consistently strives to create music and lyrics with integrity. The result of such recent endeavours is Vol.1, an accomplished debut that could just as easily appeal to the most discerning music fan, as well as those who simply love good music.
